Maryland CPSP Centers host “Area CPE Day” By Phil Pinckard

On July 26 2012, four Maryland CPSP CPE Centers of the Baltimore Chapter met together with their respective Diplomates in CPE Supervision and current residents and interns to participate in a day of learning, case presentation and interaction.
The Reverend Kay Myers, Ph.D., Director of Pastoral Care and CPE Supervisor, hosted the event at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Diplomates the Rev. David C. Baker, Ph.D, of Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, Rabbi Jim Michaels, D.Min., of the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, DC, and the Rev. C. K. Sim, D.Min., of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, welcomed area CPE students to the event. Two satellite programs under supervision of the Rev. David C. Baker, Ph.D., at Hospice of the Panhandle, Martinsburg, WV, led by the Rev. Dr. John Waidande and Hospice of Washington County, Inc., led by the Rev. Andrew Young were represented, as well as a 50 hour Clinical Pastoral Orientation program at Western Maryland Hospital Center led by the Rev. Richard Bower.
Since 2005, the Maryland CPSP group has developed from a group of three people initially meeting in the lobby of the Hebrew Home, to three chapters, one of Diplomates and two for clinical chaplains. Over 40 trainees, directors, supervisors and supervisors-in-training were present at the event.
The day was organized and coordinated by Dr. Kay Myers of Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Modeled after regional events like the National Clinical Training Seminars which are held on both coasts in the spring and fall, the day began with a clinical presentation on how to provide spiritual care to non-communicative patients by the Rev. Rich Bower, SIT. Rich retired from US Army Chaplaincy and holds the rank of Colonel. He has a background in the medical laboratory, and still holds his Registry with the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
Case presentations in six small groups of trainees, diplomates and supervisors-in-training rounded out the morning.
After lunch the Rev. Phil Pinckard, SIT, presented on faith perspectives on donation and transplantation. Phil’s only son Mark, died May 20, 2002 and became an organ, tissue, cornea and heart valve donor.
The day ended with another 90 minute session of case presentations by CPE trainees in small groups. As is the practice at NCTS, each group reported on their interactions. Then participants responded regarding their learning experiences.
The directors of our area CPSP CPE Centers plan to repeat this educational, interactive event, and perhaps expand it to include centers in nearby Delaware, Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Such events promote collegiality, learning and quality consultation. They are also economical to students and centers.
A group photo was taken and certificates of participation were provided for the day.
A roster of Directors, Supervisors-in-Training and students will be compiled with plans to establish a List Serve to foster stronger communication and support among area CPE centers.
