Note of Concern From Chris Swift, President of the UK's College of Health Care Chaplains
Our friend and colleague, Dr. Chris Swift, President of the UK's College of Health Care Chaplains (CHCC) sends to the CPSP community the following note of concern that includes a beautiful prayer:
I was saddened to hear of the recent shooting in the USA. The news broke here today - when I am taking part in the first ecumenical service in Leeds for relatives of those who have been murdered. It's being run by a group called Support After Murder and Manslaughter (SAMM). I have written the following prayer for inclusion in the service, which seems as relevant to the tragedy in the US as it does to the individual tragedies of countless families around the world each day: and which
scarcely get a media comment.
"Be present, O Lord, with all those whose pain and grief is so difficult to bear. Be close to those who feel alone, or full of anger or fearful. And be gentle with those who turn to you not knowing what to feel or to say.
Lord, sustain those who feel divided from a world that does not comprehend their tragedy. In love draw back into life the despairing and the doubtful. And in your mercy surround those whom we continue to love, and remember here, with the constant light and eternal peace of your presence.Amen."
Dr. Swift will end his term of office as President of the UK's College of Health Care Chaplains at the end of December 2007. Chris, who was the guest of honor at the 2007 CPSP Plenary meeting in Raleigh, NC, will continue to be our valued colleague and friend. In addition, we look forward to our rich and substantive relationship with the College of Health Care Chaplains.
We wish his successor, the Rev. Anne Aldridge, who will become President of the College of Health Care Chaplains, our blessings and continued interest in the success of the College.
