The Executive Committee meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas, on October 11-13, 2012, spent the majority of its time considering the current governance of CPSP, especially its current limits. The conclusion reached was that CPSP had outgrown its current form of governance and was now called upon to make significant changes to insure that CPSP can continue to advance its creative and dynamic mission in the clinical pastoral field.
The Executive Committee built upon the work of David Roth, Henry Heffernan, and others who have been exploring alternate forms of governance. As leadership clearly needs to be more dramatically distributed throughout the community, we sought alternatives to our current governance that might be more suited to our expanding membership.
The new governance structure is designed to connect more significantly with chapter life as a means to support, educate, challenge and honor both the autonomy and accountability of chapters, fulfilling the stated commitment of CPSP as a grassroots movement in the clinical pastoral field.
The new governance creates two self-governing divisions.
One division is for Diplomates: Clinical Pastoral Supervision and/or Pastoral Psychotherapy.
The other division is for Pastoral Clinicians: Board Certified Clinical Chaplains, Board Certified Associate Clinical Chaplains, Board Certified Pastoral Counselors, Board Certified Associate Pastoral Counselors, Board Certified Clinical Fellows in Hospice and Palliative Care, Clinically Trained Ministers, and Members of CPSP.
The two new executive committees will manage the affairs of their respective divisions, providing vision, leadership, discipline, standards, and certification for members of their division. As the two new executive committees become fully functioning, the current CPSP Executive Committee will morph into a smaller Board of Directors that will serve as the ultimate governing authority in CPSP.
The Executive Committee announces the appointment of two new task forces assigned to implement the new governing structures.
For the Pastoral Clinicians: Henry Heffernan, chair, Ruth Zollinger, Alexis Versalle, Diana Perkins, and Julien Olivier.
For the Diplomates: Dallas Speight, chair, John Jeffery, Paula Belleggie, and Beverly Jessup.
The membership of these committees is subject to change or additions as the work proceeds. We are placing no time constraints for their work to be completed.
We appreciate their willingness to work, and we wish them godspeed.
