Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues, families, and their patients in Texas and Louisiana, as mandatory evacuations took place (and were disregarded) in coastal and metropolitan counties along the Texas Gulf Coast. hurricane Ike has has destroyed not only property but lives. Many, including emergency respondents are in desperate need for the services of clinically trained chaplains.
Only three years ago, numerous evacuees died in traffic and other accidents during the mandatory evacuation of the Houston area before hurricane Rita made landfall. Today, government hoped to apply lessons learned and had far smoother evacuation implementation by only doing coastal counties by zip codes and not the entire Houston metro area.
That being said, numerous hospitals, nursing homes, and special needs populations were evacuated. If you are reading this email update, you fully realize the implications of evacuating an entire hospital---as well as sheltering in place and hunkering down if one did not evacuate. Oftentimes, very bad things continue to happen to populations that already are living on the margins of society---the aged, the infirmed, injured, the poor, and the incapacitated. Extreme weather occurrences like hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes exacerbate the living conditions of all in harm's way.
1. If you can deploy immediately to serve those impacted by hurricane Ike, please let me know ASAP for a two week deployment.
2. Training will be on-site because of the urgency.
Several members of our CPSP community have already responded to this national emergency.
