Hospicio La Paz, Inc. (Hospice of The Peace, Inc.) is home for the first CPE students ever exposed to the clinical method of learning and recovery of souls in Puerto Rico under the auspices of the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy.
Luis R. Monrouzeau is the President, owner and CEO of Hospicio La Paz. It is the largest Hospice in Puerto Rico. Mr. Monrouzeaus philosophy is simple in nature; provide the best quality of service to all. Over the last ten years the staff and employees throughout the nine established offices under Hospicio La Paz have shared this philosophy with great success.
As Director of the Department of Chaplaincy Services and Clinical Pastoral Care at Hospicio La Paz, Im appreciative of the fact that as an institution we cradle a very unique and professional opportunity. My experience in ministry and my twenty-one years as a Lay Chaplain to the Hispanic community in the Armed Forces has been a resource informing my development of the department.
After military retirement one of my goals was to bring CPE to Puerto Rico. Mr. Monrouzeau granted me the opportunity to develop the Pastoral Department at Hospicio La Paz. Several years passed while selecting and shaping my staff in the role of the clinical chaplain. This concept of clinical method of learning and providing ministry as a clinically trained chaplain was new to my staff.
January 2005 was the beginning of my long-term goal fulfillment and new breaking ground for CPE in Puerto Rico under CPSP. I invited the COMISS Network Commission on Accreditation of Pastoral Services to conduct an inspection of our Pastoral Department. The survey team assessed that Hospicio La Paz had an excellent Pastoral Care Department and exceeded far beyond their expectations. They stated during their report back that no other Hospice has been granted accreditation by the COMISS Network. One thing was lacking for the department; the staff chaplains had no CPE training with the exception of myself.
I diligently began conversation with the inspection team on ways to have my staff trained. Several months of brainstorming produced only a lockup in the process. Thanks to David B. Plummer, Chair of CCAPS and the General Secretary of CPSP Raymond Lawrence, who were encouraging and supportive of this new breaking ground initiative.
September 2005 we began our first unit of CPE offering training as a CPSP program.
Hospicio La Paz staff Chaplains began their new journey in the recovery of soul as they are engaging the CPE process. The CPE setting allows for a better group process environment while chaplains learn about the Human Living Document experience. Our chaplains report having a transformational educational process experience.
Our second unit is scheduled for January 2006.
