For many this will be a heart felt Christmas given the events of 9/11 and that which has followed. Christmas at its best is always something felt and not thought about. What will follow are a few offerings from NPR that are my personal favorites. They will stir the heart and spirit. (Free RealPlayer Basic Required for Listening. Henry Fulks, a story teller, tell his famous Christmas Story. Fulks captures the kindness and expansiveness of the human sprit that transcends race and poverty.
Christmas Over There is the true and amazing story of how on Christmas Eve enemies facing one another in their trenches during World War I dropped their arms and literally met in no mans land to sing Christmas carols, share food and gifts and Christmas wishes. They refused to see one another as enemies. If this spontaneous truce could have held in 1914, millions of lives would have been saved from the ravages of war.
Finally, James Taylor recently recorded Just Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. In this unreleased recording he captures the rather sad and yet courageous spirit of those who struggle with their lives yet knowing the value of relationships and community. The lyrics say it well:
Through the years, we all will be together
If the fates allow
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow
The PR wishes you and yours all the blessings and love of Christmas knowing that many of us ...will have to muddle through somehow...
